The Best Summerhouse

In partnership with: TV3

The Latvian pilot of Nidus Balticus tested a new way to talk about renewable energy — through everyday culture rather than politics. Partnering with TV3 and White Label / McCann Riga, the campaign invited people across Latvia to take part in “The Best Summerhouse” contest, celebrating creativity, independence, and practical energy solutions.

Summerhouses – an essential part of Latvia’s lifestyle – became an inspiring entry point to start a national conversation on energy independence. Participants shared how they had turned their summer places into more efficient, energy-saving spaces, showing that renewables are not only about the environment but also about comfort, savings, and freedom from rising energy prices.

The campaign quickly captured public attention. Through TV3’s nationwide coverage and digital outreach, the initiative reached over 600,000 viewers and online users, with hundreds of people engaging directly in the contest. Entries ranged from solar-powered cabins to energy-smart family retreats, proving that small personal projects can inspire wider social change.

By framing renewable energy as something practical and beneficial — rather than ideological — the project successfully reached traditionally skeptical audiences, particularly within Russian-speaking communities. It helped shift perceptions of renewables from a costly obligation to a smart investment in one’s home and future.

This pilot laid the foundation for a long-term, community-driven engagement model in Latvia. Building on its success, Nidus Balticus aims to expand the concept to other cultural settings and regions, continuing to show that energy independence begins not in government programs, but in the everyday spaces people care most about.
